Calla zantedeschia

The Zantedeschia is a desert plant, which is a member of the arum family. Its origin is mainly in South Africa. The plant was first described in the 18th century by the botanist Giovanni Zantedeschi, after whom it was named. In contrast, the Calla Aethiopica, with which the Zantedeschia is often confused, is actually a marsh plant and likes wet feet. You may also know the plant by the name Calla, Arum or cup plant. Of which the last two names originated according to Greek myths, these described that Greek gods drank from the calyx of this flower. Whatever you call the houseplant, it is a classic beauty and a cheerful sunny character. The leaves and calyces of the Calla stand proudly up and the plant usually reaches a height of 40 to 55 centimeters. The arrow-shaped leaves are bright green, between which emerge stems with funnel-shaped bracts. These come in red, pink, cream, yellow, purple, orange, white and even black and protect the spike.

Care tips

Because of its African past, the Zantedeschia (Calla) likes light and reasonable heat. In addition, water the plant once or twice a week and a little plant food for beautiful results. Old bracts that turn green can be left in place, just remove them when they turn brown. Has the Zantedeschia (Calla) finished flowering? Then you can plant the plant in a sunny spot in the garden, where it will reappear next year after dying off.
