Hippeastrum

Amaryllis belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is actually called Hippeastrum. Amaryllis and Hippeastrum are two closely related genera and are often confused. The biggest difference is in the stem. Amaryllis has a massive stem and Hippeastrum has a hollow stem. Hippeus means knight and Astrum star, hence the Dutch name Ridderster. Hippeastrum is available today in many types and colors. While this used to be mainly only red and pink, now almost all colors are imaginable. Large-flowered, double-flowered, small-flowered, butterfly-flowered and multiflora types have become available in a wide range in recent years. Hippeastrum is available from us as a dry bulb, waxed and potted. Both dry bulbs and potted plants bear our own "Flora Magica" label.

Care tips
Hippeastrum (Amaryllis)

Can tolerate both lots of light and shade. The soil should be kept moist; fertilizing is not necessary. You can save a potted Amaryllis to make it bloom again. After the last flowers, remove the stems. Leave the bulb in the pot and water it. After 7 months, cut off the leaves and remove the bulb from the pot. Place in a cool, especially dry place, 10-17'C (Cellar). Leave the bulb for about 10 weeks, then repot in a pot. Start watering the bulb again and maintain room temperature again. The bulb will start making leaves again and then flowers again. Amaryllis on glass or bowl: Remove the bulb from the pot and rinse it well under the tap (potting soil should be out of the roots). Let the bulb dry and place it on a dish or in a glass. The bulb does not need water to bloom. Amaryllis in the garden: This bulbous plant also does well outdoors. Starting in early May, the bulb can be planted outside. Again, keep the soil moist for best results. Make sure the bulb is in a place where it cannot catch too much wind so that the petals remain beautiful.
