Energy

We contribute to the environment through sustainable energy use. Our main location and Rusthoven Avenue are equipped with over 990 solar panels. We also use a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) system. This installation captures released heat to heat the greenhouse and produce electricity or supply it back to the grid. As a result, we save up to 20% energy, with an energy efficiency of 98% per m3 of gas, much more efficient than traditional gas-fired power plants.

water conservation

Our main site has underground water storage with a capacity of 6,000 m3 (6 million liters) of clean water. This provides space to store excess water under the greenhouse, which is then used for our cultivation. In this way we prevent water nuisance in the neighborhood during rainy periods. Due to its location by the sea, clean water can be pumped to the sea during heavy rainfall, and then the rainwater can be recaptured in the basement. Our emission of water from cultivation is cleaned in our own water treatment plant, in cooperation with other growers in the polder.

recycling

Our greenhouses on Monsterseweg and Rusthovenlaan are certified as Green Label Greenhouses, which contributes to the sustainability of greenhouse farming by meeting strict environmental requirements. Our labels and growing pots are made of recycled plastic from consumer residual streams and can be recycled again after use.

Cultivation

At Vreugdenhil Bulbs & Plants, we are committed to making our cultivation more and more sustainable. In our green label greenhouses we apply more and more biological crop protection to control insect and fungus pests. We grow 90% of our products in peat-free substrates, which saves a lot of CO2 emissions.

As an employer and producer, we want to deal responsibly with our staff, the origin of products, the separation of our waste streams and the way they are grown. To guarantee this and make it measurable for our customers, we comply with various certifications from MPS. MPS develops and manages the certification schemes and contributes to the globally recognized Sustainable Development Goals through FSI (Floriculture Sustainability Initiative), among others. Vreugdenhil Bulbs & Plants complies with the ‘FSI Basket’where we meet requirements in the areas of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), social and environmental.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Zambia Carnivores program

Our African Breeze brand includes several products with deep roots in Africa. A portion of the proceeds from these products benefit the continent they come from. This is why we support the Zambia Carnivores Program (ZCP), a Zambian non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of large carnivores and their ecosystems.
